The podium.

This category covers fine fragrance in every strength, from extrait and eau de parfum to eau de toilette, eau de cologne, body mists and hair perfumes, along with the inexpensive dupes and layering sprays that have become social-media favorites. Fragrance is personal, so we focus on what can be compared: how well a scent is constructed, how long it lasts and how far it carries for most wearers, and what it costs per milliliter.

Concentration names describe how much perfume oil is in the alcohol base, roughly 20–24% for parfum, about 15% for eau de parfum, about 10% for eau de toilette and about 5% for eau de cologne, but these figures are conventions rather than regulated standards, and a strong EDT can outlast a weak EDP. In the US, perfume is regulated as a cosmetic and does not need FDA approval before sale, while the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) sets industry standards that restrict or limit certain materials. Fragrance is also one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis, so spray on clothing or hair rather than irritated skin if you react.

Our Scent score weights scent quality 30%, longevity and projection 25%, versatility 10%, value 20% and community love 15%. Scent quality reflects how well blended, distinctive and wearable a composition is according to reviewers and fragrance communities; longevity and projection rely on wearer reports, which vary with skin and climate; and value compares price per milliliter against similar scents and dupes.

Buying guide

How to choose fragrance.

  1. 01

Sample before buying a full bottle

Perfume changes over hours as top notes fade into the heart and base. Wear a sample or decant on skin for a full day, ideally more than once, before buying. Paper strips show only the opening.

  2. 02

    Understand concentration, but test longevity

Parfum and eau de parfum generally last longer than eau de toilette and cologne, but the formula and materials matter as much as the label. Base notes such as woods, amber, musk and vanilla tend to last longer than citrus and green notes.

  3. 03

Know the scent families you like

Fragrance is often grouped into floral, gourmand, fresh (citrus, aquatic, green) and woody or amber families. If you know which you reach for, it is easier to evaluate new releases and dupes.

  4. 04

    Make it last longer

Apply to moisturized skin, since many wearers find fragrance fades faster on dry skin, and to pulse points or clothing. Avoid rubbing wrists together. A matching unscented or same-scent lotion underneath can help.

  5. 05

Store it away from heat and light

Heat, sunlight and air can change a fragrance over time. Keep bottles closed, in their boxes or a cool, dark drawer, rather than on a sunny bathroom shelf.

  6. 06

    Compare price per milliliter

Bottle sizes vary from 5 ml rollerballs to 200 ml body mists. Calculate price per milliliter and compare like with like: a cheap body mist with low concentration is not a bargain if it fades in an hour.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What's the difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette?

Eau de parfum usually contains more perfume oil, around 15%, than eau de toilette, around 10%, so it often lasts longer and projects more. The ratios are conventions rather than regulated standards, and the same scent in EDP and EDT may be reformulated with different notes. Our fragrance concentrations guide explains the full range.

How can I make my perfume last longer?

Apply it to moisturized skin and to clothing or hair, spray rather than dab, don't rub your wrists together and store bottles away from heat and light. Layering with a matching body lotion helps. Choosing a stronger concentration or a scent with heavier base notes is the most reliable fix.

Why can't I smell my perfume after a while?

Your nose adapts to constant smells, a process called olfactory fatigue, so others may still smell a fragrance you have stopped noticing. Resist over-spraying; ask someone else whether it is still detectable.

Can perfume cause skin reactions?

Yes. DermNet lists fragrance as one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis, second only to nickel. Reactions can appear hours to days after contact. If you get a rash, stop using the product and see a dermatologist, who can patch test to identify the culprit.
