The verdict
The cult multi-use oil for scars and stretch marks, backed mainly by the brand's own trials and still fragranced.
Bio-Oil Skincare Oil is a mineral-oil-based blend with vitamins A and E, calendula and chamomile, lavender and rosemary oils that the brand says is clinically proven to help improve the appearance of scars and stretch marks, and it is also sold for uneven tone, aging and dehydrated skin. Bio-Oil's own placebo-controlled trials report improvement in most participants, and NewBeauty and Marie Claire still rate it a cult classic. It contains fragrance and a dye, and some users find it greasy or too occlusive for the face.

How it scored
Five factors, weighted for formulas. Here’s our working.
Beauty score out of 10. Brands can’t pay for placement — ever.
Bio-Oil's own placebo-controlled trials report improved appearance of scars and stretch marks in most participants after eight weeks, but published independent evidence is limited.
A mineral-oil base with vitamins A and E and plant oils seals in moisture, but fragrance, essential oils and a dye add irritation risk, and a Reddit commenter warns its isopropyl myristate can clog facial pores.
Bio-Oil's absorption studies rate it fast-absorbing for most testers, though Marie Claire notes some users find it a little too greasy.
$11.12 for 2 fl oz at Walmart is affordable per bottle, and Walmart's larger 6.7 fl oz size costs less per ounce.
A cult classic that NewBeauty named its best stretch mark treatment in 2025 and Marie Claire calls a favorite of many moms-to-be, with skeptics on Reddit.

3 verbatim quotes · 2 positive · 1 critical
Lightly scented and non-comedogenic, there's a reason people repurchase this stuff time and time again—even after the marks they were looking to erase are long gone.
There are so many products that claim to improve the appearance of stretch marks, but not many have done clinical studies to prove it. We've trusted this product for years, and sometimes nothing new can beat a cult-classic.
I agree you should ditch the Bio-Oil. It contains Isopropyl Myristate which is a heavy occlusive.

Bio-Oil says a toxicologist assessed it as safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women and suggests applying it twice a day from the first trimester. It contains vitamin A at a level the brand says is well below the EU limit, so check with a healthcare provider if unsure.
Yes. Bio-Oil's directions include the face, and its trials found it non-comedogenic. Some Reddit users with clogged pores still advise against it on the face because of its occlusive ingredients.
Bio-Oil recommends using it twice daily for at least three months. Its trials ran for 8 to 12 weeks and measured improvements from two weeks onward.
