Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect skin lipids from oxidation and adds emollience to formulas. It is most useful as a partner for vitamin C and as a stabilizer for oils.

What it does
The short version.
Tocopherol sits in cell membranes and the skin's surface oils, where it neutralizes lipid free radicals generated by UV. It works in a network with vitamin C, which can regenerate it after it is used up, and the vitamin C, E and ferulic acid combination has been shown in laboratory skin to boost protection against UV damage. In formulas it also softens skin and slows rancidity in plant oils.
Moderate evidence
Laboratory and small human studies support an antioxidant role, especially combined with vitamin C. Popular claims that vitamin E oil improves scars are not supported by controlled studies.
