The verdict
A soap-free, fragrance-free wash with a short ingredient list and the NEA Seal — a go-to for dry, sensitive or retinoid-stressed skin.
Vanicream's Gentle Facial Cleanser is a soap-free, fragrance-free wash built on glycerin and mild non-soap surfactants, with no botanical extracts or essential oils and the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance. The brand makes it for dry, sensitive and delicate skin and says it removes makeup and excess oil without drying. On Reddit it is a staple for compromised or tretinoin-treated skin. The main caveats are that some users find it isn't enough to remove sunscreen on its own, and a few report reactions.

How it scored
Five factors, weighted for formulas. Here’s our working.
Beauty score out of 10. Brands can’t pay for placement — ever.
Reddit users with compromised, rosacea-prone or tretinoin-treated skin repeatedly describe it as a no-burn wash, though some find it too mild to remove sunscreen on its own.
A twelve-ingredient, soap-free formula of glycerin and mild glucoside and glycinate surfactants, free of fragrance, botanicals and essential oils, is about as low-risk as cleansers get, though it adds no barrier actives.
Users describe a light lather that still feels like it cleans and rinses without a film, but it is a plain, no-frills wash.
Ulta lists the 8 oz pump bottle at $12.99, in line with other drugstore gentle cleansers and far below prestige options.
A long-running favorite on dermatologist channels and in r/SkincareAddicts and r/tretinoin, with a minority reporting reactions or that it does not remove SPF well.

Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser. My absolute goat for cleansing compromised or sensitive skin. No notes.
i switched to vanicream gentle cleanser after my skin decided cetaphil was suddenly the enemy. it lathers just a tiny bit so it feels like youre actually washing something off but still zero burn on my angry skin days
I use the Bioderma Sensibio Micellar Cleansing oil and the vanicream facial cleanser. … Then I rinse it off and wash with the vanicream. It’s been the best cleansing combo for my face that I’ve found.
I find that the vanicream cleanser alone is not enough to remove sunscreen at the end of the day. I would suggest a different cleanser or even a double cleanse.
Believe it or not vanicream cleanser actually caused these tiny bumps on my skin. I chose it because it was supposed to be gentle for sensitive skin, but for some reason I had this reaction to it.
