Also listed as Glycerol and Glycerine
Glycerin is a simple, inexpensive humectant found in most moisturizers and cleansers, and one of the best-studied hydrating ingredients in skincare. It pulls water into the outer skin layer and supports barrier function.
What it does
Glycerin attracts and holds water in the stratum corneum, improving hydration and smoothness, and it helps the outer skin layer function and repair after irritation. It also keeps lipids in the skin barrier more fluid in dry conditions. Because it is so effective and well tolerated, it is a backbone ingredient in moisturizers for dry and sensitive skin.
Strong evidence
Decades of experimental and clinical research show that glycerin improves skin hydration and barrier properties; it is a standard reference humectant in dermatology.
In our directory: It’s a key ingredient in 33 products we review, most often moisturizers and sunscreen. Those products are mostly built for hydrating, dryness relief and long-lasting moisture. In formulas, it most often shares the label with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and squalane.
