Styling products shape, hold and protect: curl creams and gels for definition, mousses for volume, heat protectants for blow-drying and hot tools, texture sprays and hairsprays, smoothing serums and dry shampoos. The best product depends heavily on hair type, so a gel that is perfect for wavy hair may be crunchy on fine hair or not strong enough for coily hair.
Two safety points matter most. Heat protectants reduce, but do not eliminate, heat damage; studies of pretreatments before flat ironing show some ingredients protect better than others, and keeping tools at lower temperatures matters as much as the product. The American Academy of Dermatology also cautions that combing through 'long-lasting hold' products can break hair, and that tight styles kept in for long periods can lead to hair loss. Dry shampoo absorbs oil between washes but does not clean the scalp, so it works best as a bridge between washes rather than a replacement.
Our Beauty score for styling products weights results 30%, formula and ingredients 20%, texture and experience 15%, value 20% and community love 15%. Results cover hold, definition, frizz control and heat protection for the hair types a product targets, as reported by creators and the community; formula rewards suitable film formers, conditioning agents and honest protection claims; and experience weighs crunch, flaking, residue and scent.

Bumble and bumble
A six-oil leave-in primer spray that detangles, softens and adds heat protection to 450°F plus UV filters, at a salon-brand price.

Batiste
The classic aerosol dry shampoo: rice starch soaks up oil fast for very little money, with a soapy citrus scent and possible residue.

Kinky-Curly
A concentrated agave-based gel with strong definition and hold for curls and coils, if applied to soaking-wet hair in sections.

OUAI
A salt-free texture spray for soft, undone beach waves without crunch; easy to use, but pricey for a light-hold mist.
Buying guide
Fine and straight hair usually suits light mousses and sprays. Wavy hair often likes a light cream plus a gel; curly and coily hair often needs richer creams and stronger gels for definition. Layering a cream for moisture under a gel for hold is a common approach.
Heat protectants form a film that can reduce damage from blow-dryers and irons. Lab studies show their protection varies by ingredient, and none makes high temperatures safe. Pair them with a lower tool setting and fewer passes.
Gels and creams from different brands can react and flake when layered. Strong-hold products build up over time; a clarifying wash every week or two helps. Apply products to the lengths rather than the scalp if you are prone to scalp irritation.
Dry shampoo absorbs oil and adds texture, but it does not clean the scalp. Spray from a distance, let it sit, then brush or massage it out. Several aerosol dry shampoos were recalled in 2021 and 2022 over benzene contamination from propellants; check a brand's recall history if this concerns you.
The AAD notes that combing hair after applying long-lasting hold products can cause breakage. Style while products are wet, then scrunch or break the cast by hand once dry.

FAQ
They help. Studies of pretreatments before flat ironing found that certain polymers and silicones reduced measurable damage compared with untreated hair, though protection varied widely by product. No heat protectant makes very high temperatures safe, so combine one with lower heat and fewer passes. Our heat styling guide explains the research.
Used occasionally, it is fine for most people. Using it for many days in a row without washing can leave residue that may irritate the scalp or clog follicles. Wash regularly, and stop if your scalp becomes itchy or flaky.
Curl creams are moisturizing and give soft definition with little or no hold. Gels contain film-forming polymers that hold curls in shape and resist frizz, often drying to a 'cast' you scrunch out. Many curly routines use both.
Products themselves rarely do, but the way you style can. The AAD warns that combing through long-hold products can break hair and that tight braids, ponytails and extensions worn continuously can cause traction alopecia. If you notice thinning at the hairline or part, loosen styles and see a dermatologist.
