The verdict
A cheap, lightweight rice-protein curl cream that defines and softens waves and curls but gives little hold without a gel.
Curl Talk Defining Cream is Not Your Mother's drugstore styling cream for waves, curls and coils, built on the brand's Rice Curl Complex of rice extract, keratin amino acids and enzymes. The brand says it boosts definition, seals in moisture and controls frizz, and lists it as free of sulfate surfactants, silicones and parabens. Curly-hair creators have reviewed it widely for years. Reddit users like it as a light, non-greasy cream for fine waves but note it provides little hold on its own, and the brand recommends layering its Sculpting Gel on top.

How it scored
Five factors, weighted for formulas. Here’s our working.
Beauty score out of 10. Brands can’t pay for placement — ever.
Creators and Reddit users report soft, defined, low-frizz waves and curls, though several note it gives little hold unless a gel goes on top.
A silicone- and sulfate-free cream with rice extract, keratin amino acids and conditioning polymers; the protein and fragrance won't suit every head of curls.
Reddit users describe it as light and not greasy and easy to scrunch out, with a citrus-jasmine scent; fine hair needs only a small amount.
At $10.99 for 6 fl oz it is among the cheapest widely reviewed curl creams, and creators note it is easy to find at Target and Walmart.
A long-running drugstore staple reviewed by many curly-hair YouTubers, generally liked by wavy and curly Redditors who often pair it with a gel.

On damp hair, apply a quarter-size amount evenly from roots to ends, adding more as needed, then air dry or style; the brand suggests scrunching Curl Talk Sculpting Gel over it for hold.

I found gel and mousse were also making my waves stringy so I switched to NYM curl talk cream after the NYM leave in conditioner. I don’t get the same definition as gel, but I can scrunch the crunch and it doesn’t get frizzy.
I love this brand for my finer 3a-c hair. I pretty much only use nym curl talk. Shampoo, conditioner, curl cream and mousse.
Hydrolyzed rice protein is very good at this and will fill the gaps in bleached hair so it curls better. Try NYM Curl Talk Curl Cream.
You are currently using creams (Cantu / NYM defining cream), which provide moisture but no structural hold.

FAQ
Not necessarily, but the brand says layering gives the best definition and hold: apply the cream first on soaking-wet hair, then scrunch in Curl Talk Sculpting Gel. Reddit users note the cream alone provides moisture but little hold.
Yes. The standard version contains keratin amino acids as part of the Rice Curl Complex. Not Your Mother's makes a separate Fragrance & Protein Free Defining Cream for protein-sensitive hair.
The brand says it suits 2A to 4C patterns and advises a dime-size amount on soaking-wet hair, kept away from the roots, for fine or thin waves. Thicker coils need more product applied in sections.
The brand lists it as free of sulfate surfactants, silicones, parabens, phthalates, drying alcohols, gluten and dyes, and says its products are cruelty-free.
