The podium.

Hair treatments promise to repair damage, add moisture, calm the scalp or support growth. This category covers bond-building treatments such as Olaplex and K18, deep-conditioning masks, hair oils, leave-in conditioners and scalp serums, including the rosemary oil and peptide products that dominate social media.

It helps to know what hair can and cannot do. The hair shaft is not living tissue, so treatments improve how existing hair looks and behaves rather than healing it. Conditioning agents, oils and proteins smooth the cuticle, reduce friction and temporarily fill gaps; bond builders are designed to reconnect or protect broken disulfide bonds after bleaching and chemical services, though much of the evidence comes from the brands themselves. Scalp products for growth have limited support: a small 2015 trial compared rosemary oil with 2% minoxidil, but larger independent trials are lacking. Sudden or patchy hair loss needs a dermatologist, not a serum.

Our Beauty score for hair treatments weights results 30%, formula and ingredients 20%, texture and experience 15%, value 20% and community love 15%. Results reflect softness, shine, reduced breakage and manageability reported by creators and the community over weeks of use; formula rewards honest descriptions of what an ingredient does, appropriate conditioning agents for the hair type and safe scalp formulas; and value compares price per use, since treatments vary from a weekly dollop to daily drops.

Buying guide

How to choose treatments.

  1. 01

Match the treatment to the damage

Bleached, lightened or chemically straightened hair benefits most from bond-building treatments. Dry, frizzy hair benefits from moisturizing masks and leave-ins. Limp hair that breaks easily may respond to protein treatments, while stiff, brittle hair after a protein treatment usually needs moisture instead.

  2. 02

    Read bond-builder claims carefully

Olaplex's patented ingredient is bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, and K18 uses a proprietary peptide. Both report results from brand studies; independent evidence is limited. They can be worthwhile for bleached hair, but they do not make hair new again, and they are not a substitute for gentler coloring and heat habits.

  3. 03

Use oils for shine and friction, not growth

Oils such as argan and coconut add shine, reduce friction and help prevent water from swelling the hair shaft too quickly. A little goes a long way on fine hair. Claims that oils regrow hair are not well supported.

  4. 04

    Be cautious on the scalp

Scalp serums with essential oils, including rosemary, can irritate or cause allergic reactions. Patch test, dilute oils properly and stop if you notice itching or redness. For thinning hair, see a board-certified dermatologist, who can identify the cause and discuss evidence-based options.

  5. 05

    Avoid formaldehyde-releasing smoothing treatments

The FDA warns that many hair smoothing and straightening solutions contain formaldehyde or related chemicals that are released as a gas when heated. Ask salons what they use, and look for ingredient names such as formalin, methylene glycol or formaldehyde.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is the difference between Olaplex and K18?

Olaplex uses bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, which the brand says reconnects broken disulfide bonds, and is often used during and after lightening. K18 uses a patented peptide that the brand says works inside the hair to restore strength and elasticity. Both rely heavily on brand research. Our guide to bond builders explains what each has shown.

Does rosemary oil really grow hair?

The evidence is thin. A single 2015 trial in 100 men with pattern hair loss found rosemary oil produced similar hair count gains to 2% minoxidil after six months, with less scalp itching, but the study was small and single-blind and has not been replicated in larger trials. Our rosemary oil guide covers the details.

How often should I use a hair mask?

Once a week suits most people; very dry, curly, coily or bleached hair may benefit from more. Leave it on for the time the label recommends, and rinse thoroughly to avoid buildup, especially on fine hair.

Can hair treatments repair split ends?

No product permanently fuses a split end. Conditioning treatments can temporarily seal and smooth them so they look better, but the only lasting fix is a trim. Reducing heat, friction and chemical processing prevents new splits.
