Emerging evidence

Topical collagen is a protein-derived humectant and film-former. It helps skin hold water and feel smoother, but intact collagen molecules are too large to rebuild collagen in the skin.

What it does

The short version.

Collagen in skincare is usually partially hydrolyzed into smaller peptides so it can dissolve and spread. On the surface it binds water and forms a soft film, which plumps and smooths the look of skin while it is on, and it is the base of many viral overnight sheet masks. Native collagen penetrates poorly, and there is little evidence that applying it raises collagen in the dermis; ingredients with stronger evidence for firmness include retinoids, vitamin C and some peptides. Oral collagen supplements are a separate topic with their own research.

Emerging evidence

Reviews support topical collagen hydrolysates as safe moisturizing ingredients, but human trials showing they rebuild dermal collagen are lacking; most evidence is laboratory or small-pilot work.

In our directory: It’s a key ingredient in 1 product we review, most often exfoliants & masks. Those products are mostly built for hydrating, plumping and pore refining. In formulas, it most often shares the label with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and glycerin.

How to use it

Getting it right.

Use as directed, typically as a serum, cream or overnight mask applied after cleansing and before or instead of moisturizer.

Layering

Friends & frenemies.

Before you start

Generally well tolerated. Collagen is usually derived from fish or bovine sources, so check the label if you avoid animal-derived ingredients; some masks are occlusive and may not suit very acne-prone skin.
