Also listed as Nicotinamide and Vitamin B3
Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that supports the skin barrier and is studied for uneven tone, redness and oiliness. It is well tolerated by most skin types and works in many formulas.
What it does
Niacinamide is a precursor to NAD+, a molecule involved in cellular energy and repair. Topically it increases production of ceramides and other barrier lipids, reduces the transfer of pigment from melanocytes to surrounding skin cells, and has been shown in small studies to reduce sebum output and the look of redness. Benefits are gradual, typically assessed after 8–12 weeks.
Moderate evidence
Randomized split-face and vehicle-controlled studies (many from one manufacturer) support improvements in hyperpigmentation, redness and texture at 2–5%. A Cochrane review rated evidence for niacinamide in acne as low certainty.
In our directory: It’s a key ingredient in 15 products we review, most often serums and cleansers. Those products are mostly built for barrier repair, hydrating and dryness relief. In formulas, it most often shares the label with glycerin, hyaluronic acid and ceramides.

How to use it
Apply once or twice daily after cleansing and before moisturizer; it can be used morning or night alongside most other actives.
Layering
Before you start
Well tolerated by most people, but higher concentrations (10% and up) can cause redness, itching or flushing in some. Older claims that it cannot be used with vitamin C are based on high-heat lab conditions and do not reflect normal use.
