Panthenol is the alcohol form of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) that skin converts to the vitamin. It is a humectant and skin-conditioning ingredient used in moisturizers, barrier creams, lip balms and hair conditioners.
What it does
Panthenol draws water into the outer skin layer and helps reduce water loss, so it leaves skin feeling softer and less tight. Studies of dexpanthenol creams, mostly from the 1990s and 2000s and often sponsored by manufacturers, report improved hydration, smoother skin and less redness after irritation, and support for the skin's natural renewal after minor damage. In hair products it is a film-forming humectant that adds moisture, slip and shine to the hair shaft; it does not change how hair grows.
Moderate evidence
Several small controlled studies and reviews support hydration and soothing effects of topical dexpanthenol, but many are older and industry-funded. Benefits for hair are largely cosmetic (feel and shine).
