Hydrocolloid

Also listed as hydrocolloid dressing, pimple patch and acne patch

Moderate evidence

Hydrocolloid is the gummy, absorbent wound-dressing material inside most pimple patches. It soaks up fluid from an open or popped blemish and covers it so it can't be picked.

What it does

The short version.

A hydrocolloid patch combines a gel-forming material with an adhesive film. When it sits on a weeping blemish it absorbs fluid such as pus and oil, keeps the spot moist and covered, and acts as a physical barrier against picking and bacteria from fingers. That is why patches work best on whiteheads that have come to a head or spots that are already open. They are not an acne treatment in themselves: dermatologists note they do little for deep, closed bumps or for preventing new breakouts, which still need actives such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or adapalene.

Moderate evidence

Hydrocolloid dressings are well established in wound care, but controlled trials of acne patches are few and small; in one split-face trial hydrocolloid patches cleared inflamed spots in a median of six days.

How to use it

Getting it right.

Apply to a clean, dry spot that has a visible head or has already opened, press down, and leave it on for several hours or overnight until the patch turns white.

Layering

Friends & frenemies.

Before you start

The adhesive can irritate sensitive or adhesive-allergic skin. Medicated patches that add salicylic acid or other actives can sting or dry the area. See a dermatologist for deep, painful or persistent acne.
