Sulfur is one of the oldest topical skincare ingredients, used in masks, spot treatments and washes for oily, breakout-prone skin. In the US it is an approved over-the-counter acne drug at 3–10%.

What it does

The short version.

On skin, sulfur is converted to compounds with mild antibacterial and antifungal activity, and it has a drying, peeling (keratolytic) effect that helps clear clogged pores. It is usually found in clay masks and spot treatments, often combined with resorcinol or sodium sulfacetamide. Its distinctive smell is a common complaint, though modern formulas mask it.

Emerging evidence

Long clinical use, but few modern controlled trials of sulfur alone; a Cochrane review found the acne evidence for sulfur to be of low certainty. Prescription sodium sulfacetamide-sulfur products have more data.
