Mandelic acid
Also listed as Phenylglycolic acid and AHA (alpha hydroxy acid)
Mandelic acid is a large-molecule alpha hydroxy acid originally derived from bitter almonds. It exfoliates more slowly and gently than glycolic acid, which makes it popular for sensitive and breakout-prone skin.
What it does
The short version.
Mandelic acid loosens dead skin cells like other AHAs, but its larger size means it penetrates more slowly and evenly, generally producing less stinging. It is somewhat oil-soluble and has antibacterial properties, so it is often marketed for congested skin and post-blemish marks as well as dull texture.
Emerging evidence
Evidence comes mostly from small studies of professional peels (for example 45% mandelic versus 30% salicylic peels for acne) and short cosmetic studies; data on low-strength home products are limited.

Before you start
Can raise sun sensitivity: the FDA advises daily sunscreen while using AHA products and for a week after stopping. Gentler does not mean irritation-free: overuse can still cause redness and peeling. Avoid broken or sunburned skin.
