Petrolatum

Strong evidence 30–100% as an FDA skin protectant

Petrolatum is a highly refined, semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons and one of the most effective occlusive moisturizing ingredients. It is the base of healing ointments, lip balms and 'slugging'.

What it does

The short version.

Petrolatum sits on the skin and reduces transepidermal water loss by up to about 98%, more than any other common occlusive. That lets the outer skin layer rehydrate and gives the barrier time to recover. It is recognized by the FDA as an over-the-counter skin protectant and is the standard comparator in moisturizer research.

Strong evidence

Decades of controlled research and FDA skin protectant recognition support its occlusive and barrier-protecting effects.

In our directory: It’s a key ingredient in 2 products we review, most often moisturizers. Those products are mostly built for dryness relief, soothing and irritation-free. In formulas, it most often shares the label with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and glycerin.

How to use it

Getting it right.

Apply a thin layer as the last step at night over moisturizer, or to lips, cuticles and very dry patches. Less is more on the face.

Go slow with

Not forbidden — just easier to over-do. Alternate nights or separate morning and evening.

Before you start

Cosmetic-grade petrolatum is highly refined and non-allergenic for nearly everyone. On very oily or acne-prone skin heavy layers can feel greasy. Occluding a retinoid or acid increases its penetration and possible irritation. Do not apply under oxygen therapy near the face.
