What it does

The short version.

Oat starches and beta-glucans hold water and leave a protective film; lipids and proteins help cushion the barrier; and polyphenols called avenanthramides have anti-itch and anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies. In the U.S. skin protectant rules, colloidal oatmeal may be labeled for the temporary protection and relief of minor skin irritation and itching. It is common in body lotions, bath soaks and creams for dry, sensitive skin.

Strong evidence

FDA-recognized as a safe and effective skin protectant, with long clinical use and multiple controlled studies supporting relief of dryness and itch.

How to use it

Getting it right.

Apply a colloidal oatmeal lotion or cream to dry or itchy areas as often as needed, ideally right after bathing. Bath products are dispersed in lukewarm water for a 15–20 minute soak.

Layering

Friends & frenemies.

Before you start

Very well tolerated. People with a known oat allergy should avoid it. For persistent rashes or eczema flares, see a dermatologist.
