What it does

The short version.

Centella's triterpenes have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and collagen-stimulating activity in cell and animal studies, and the plant has a long history in wound care. In cosmetics it is used to reduce the look of redness and support recovery of a stressed barrier. Small clinical studies report improved hydration, reduced water loss and less irritation, though formulas usually combine centella with other soothing ingredients, which makes its own contribution hard to isolate.

Moderate evidence

Well-studied in the lab and in wound-healing research; cosmetic clinical trials are small and frequently test multi-ingredient products.

In our directory: It’s a key ingredient in 2 products we review, most often sunscreen and serums. Those products are mostly built for soothing, uv protection and irritation-free. In formulas, it most often shares the label with zinc oxide, glycerin and propolis.

How to use it

Getting it right.

Use a centella toner, serum or cream once or twice daily, especially after exfoliating or alongside retinoids. It layers well with most actives.

Layering

Friends & frenemies.

Before you start

Usually well tolerated, but allergic contact dermatitis to centella extracts has been reported. Patch test, particularly if you react to other plant extracts.
