Retinal

Also listed as Retinaldehyde and Hydroxypinacolone retinoate (HPR) is a related but different ester

Moderate evidence 0.05–0.2% OTC

Retinal (retinaldehyde) is a vitamin A form one conversion step away from retinoic acid, so it acts faster than retinol at the same strength. It is sold over the counter and is often marketed as a middle ground between retinol and prescription tretinoin.

What it does

The short version.

Skin converts retinal directly into retinoic acid, which binds retinoid receptors and speeds cell turnover while supporting collagen. In comparisons it shows retinoid activity at low concentrations with less irritation than tretinoin, and laboratory work suggests retinal also has some activity against acne bacteria. It is chemically less stable than retinol, so airless or opaque packaging matters.

Moderate evidence

Several small clinical studies, mostly from Europe, show improvements in photoaging signs comparable to low-strength tretinoin with better tolerance. Large independent head-to-head trials against retinol are lacking.
