Rosemary oil is an essential oil from rosemary leaves that went viral as a natural hair-growth oil. Its reputation rests largely on one small trial comparing it with 2% minoxidil.
What it does
In a 2015 randomized trial of 100 men with androgenetic alopecia, a rosemary oil preparation and 2% minoxidil both produced a similar, significant increase in hair count after six months, with more scalp itching in the minoxidil group. The study was small, lacked a placebo group and has not been independently replicated. Lab studies suggest effects on blood flow and 5-alpha reductase, but evidence that rosemary oil grows hair reliably is weak. It is also used for scalp fragrance and feel.
Emerging evidence
One small, unblinded comparative trial plus lab data; reviews call for larger placebo-controlled studies before any growth claim is accepted.

How to use it
Use a pre-diluted rosemary scalp serum or add a few drops of essential oil to a carrier oil, massage into the scalp several times a week and wash out. Never apply undiluted essential oil.

Before you start
Undiluted essential oils can irritate and sensitize the scalp; patch test first. Expect months of consistent use before judging any effect. Sudden or patchy hair loss warrants a visit to a dermatologist, since proven treatments exist.
