Argan oil is pressed from the kernels of the Moroccan argan tree. It is a lightweight, conditioning oil used in hair serums, styling products and facial oils.

What it does

The short version.

Argan oil is rich in oleic and linoleic acids, tocopherols (vitamin E) and sterols. On hair it lubricates the cuticle, reducing friction, frizz and the look of split ends and adding shine; one lab study found it reduced protein loss in dyed hair. On skin it acts as an emollient that softens and helps limit water loss.

Emerging evidence

Evidence is mainly from lab studies on hair fibers and small skin studies; most hair benefits are cosmetic surface effects.

Before you start

Generally well tolerated, though rare allergic reactions have been reported. Many 'argan' products contain very little argan oil and rely on silicones; check the ingredient list.
