The verdict
The long-wear matte icon, reformulated in 2026 with 36-hour claims and skin-balancing actives; longtime fans are split on the change.
Double Wear is Estée Lauder's long-wear matte foundation, relaunched in 2026 with a more fluid, layerable formula, a Polymer Mesh Matrix and an AlgaNiacin complex with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and brown algae extract. The US listing claims 36-hour color-true, transfer-proof and waterproof wear with medium to full coverage in 57 shades. It suits oily and combination skin that needs a base to last, but many devoted users of the original say the new version is thinner, less covering or sticky.

How it scored
Five factors, weighted for makeup. Here’s our working.
Beauty score out of 10. Brands can’t pay for placement — ever.
The brand claims buildable medium-to-full matte coverage, but Reddit users who wore the original say the new formula is thinner, covers less in one layer and can feel sticky.
Estée Lauder claims 36-hour color-true, transfer-proof and waterproof wear, and creators put it through 12-hour, 14-hour, 48-hour and workout wear tests, with one creator warning that oily skin breaks it down.
Ulta lists 57 shades, and Estée Lauder says the range spans multiple intensities and cool, neutral and warm undertones, more than the 50 shades of Fenty's Pro Filt'r Soft Matte.
At $52 for 1.0 oz it is a premium price for a long-wear foundation, and Reddit users name cheaper options such as Maybelline Super Stay as replacements.
The original was a cult favorite, but 2026 Reddit threads are dominated by fans who call the reformulation awful or say it should have a different name.

It’s a thinner consistency and doesn’t provide the full coverage that the OG did in one application. … They should’ve named it something else because it’s not double wear, but it’s also not a bad product. You just have to learn how to apply it.
Have you tried the reformulation of Estée Lauder Double Wear? I found it a little drier than the old one.
I've tried out a few of the other reformulates foundations and they are all awful - EL double wear, Dior forever matte etc.
reformulate for the EU if you must, but why did you destroy studio fix powder and double wear for the north american market?

FAQ
Estée Lauder's press release says the 2026 version is more fluid, spreadable and layerable, uses a new Polymer Mesh Matrix for 36-hour color-true wear, and adds a Double Balancing Complex with niacinamide, brown algae extract, glycerin and hyaluronic acid. It also comes in a new glass bottle.
The US ingredient list on Ulta contains no sunscreen active ingredients and the listing makes no SPF claim. Wear a separate sunscreen underneath for daytime protection.
The brand claims 36-hour oil control and says it reduces skin's oil production in four weeks. Reddit users are divided: one found the new formula a little drier than the original, another found it sticky enough to need powder, and one reported breakouts from it.
Estée Lauder Canada lists the original formula on a separate product page. In October 2026 Reddit users reported that the original also reappeared on Estée Lauder's US site in a limited shade selection, without confirmation that it is permanent.
