Complexion products even out tone, blur texture and set the base for everything else: full-coverage and medium-coverage foundations, skin tints and tinted moisturizers, concealers, primers, setting powders and setting sprays. They are also the hardest makeup to buy online, because the right product in the wrong shade or undertone is still the wrong product.
Finding a match starts with depth (how light or deep your skin is) and undertone (cool, neutral, warm or olive). Swatch along the jawline so the shade blends into both face and neck, and judge it in daylight after it has dried down, since many formulas oxidize and turn slightly darker or more orange over the first 15 to 30 minutes. Online shade finders and virtual try-on tools help narrow choices, and swatches from creators with your skin tone are often the best guide. Many complexion products carry SPF, but foundation is rarely applied thickly enough to deliver the labeled protection, so use sunscreen underneath.
Our Beauty score for makeup weights payoff and performance 30%, wear time 15%, shade range and inclusivity 15%, value 20% and community love 20%. For complexion, performance covers coverage, blendability and how the finish looks on skin in daylight; wear time weighs oxidation, transfer, separation and fading by evening; and shade range rewards brands with many shades, clear undertone options and genuine depth at both the fair and deep ends rather than a cluster of medium tones.

Buying guide
Undertone is the color beneath the surface: cool (pink, red or bluish), warm (yellow, peachy or golden), neutral (a mix) or olive (greenish). Clues include how your skin looks next to white versus off-white fabric and whether gold or silver jewelry flatters you more. Many brands name shades with C, N, W or O codes; read the brand's key, because codes are not standardized.
Swatch two or three close shades along the jaw so you can see which disappears into both face and neck. Check in natural light after five to fifteen minutes, because many formulas oxidize. When buying online, use the brand's shade finder, compare against a shade you already know, and look for creator swatches on your skin tone.
Skin tints and tinted moisturizers give sheer coverage, most foundations are medium and buildable, and full-coverage formulas hide more but can look heavier. Matte finishes suit oily skin; dewy and radiant finishes suit dry or mature skin. Primers and setting products can adjust both.
SPF in foundation is tested at the same thick layer as sunscreen, and few people apply that much makeup. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher as your base and treat makeup SPF as extra.
Policies for opened or used makeup vary by retailer and brand, and some marketplace sellers do not accept returns on cosmetics. Read the policy before you order a new shade, and consider a deluxe sample or mini size first.
The FDA advises washing hands before applying makeup, not sharing products and discarding cosmetics that change color or smell. Clean sponges and brushes regularly, and use single-use applicators with store testers.

FAQ
This is oxidation: ingredients in some foundations react with air and skin oils and darken slightly during the first minutes of wear. Very oily skin can make it more noticeable. Swatch and wait 15 to 30 minutes before deciding, consider going half a shade lighter in formulas known to oxidize, and try a primer. Creator wear tests often flag oxidation.
Start from a shade you already know in another brand and use a matching tool or the brand's shade finder, then read the brand's undertone codes. Look for swatches and wear tests from creators with similar skin, and buy where returns or samples are available. Our guide to finding your foundation shade online walks through each step.
Usually not. Labeled SPF assumes a thick layer that few people apply with foundation. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher on all exposed skin; apply it before foundation and treat makeup SPF as a bonus.
Some can, especially heavy, oil-rich formulas on acne-prone skin. Look for products labeled non-comedogenic or oil-free, remove makeup thoroughly at night and clean your tools. 'Non-comedogenic' is not a standardized claim, so watch how your own skin responds over a few weeks.
