Strong evidence Up to 25% as a sunscreen active (U.S.)

Zinc oxide is a mineral (inorganic) UV filter that protects across UVB and UVA, including long-wave UVA. It is one of two sunscreen actives the FDA has proposed as generally recognized as safe and effective.

What it does

The short version.

Zinc oxide particles mostly absorb UV radiation, and to a lesser degree scatter and reflect it. Unlike most single organic filters, it covers UVA1 out to about 380 nm, so it can provide broad-spectrum protection on its own at higher concentrations. Smaller particles reduce the white cast; tinted formulas with iron oxides also help with visible light. It is also an FDA skin protectant used in diaper and barrier creams.

Strong evidence

UV protection is established by standardized SPF and broad-spectrum testing, and the FDA proposed zinc oxide as GRASE in 2019.

In our directory: It’s a key ingredient in 3 products we review, most often sunscreen and complexion. Those products are mostly built for uv protection, redness and irritation-free. In formulas, it most often shares the label with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and squalane.

How to use it

Getting it right.

Apply generously as the last skincare step, about 1/4 teaspoon for the face and neck, at least 15 minutes before sun exposure; reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

Layering

Friends & frenemies.

Before you start

Rarely irritating and a common choice for sensitive skin. Higher levels can leave a white or gray cast, especially on deeper skin tones. Spray or powder forms should not be inhaled.
